REPORT: The last ballot boxes have left the printers and have been packed and ready to be used for the Fiji general election next week.

All 196,000 printed papers are being kept at the Fiji Elections Office and complete the 700,000 total being used.

Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem said although there have not been any major setbacks, the office was still “at the mercy of tide and rough seas”.

“Pre-polling in Cicia, Lau today was postponed until 12 midday due to the late arrival of the boat, we had rough seas,” he said.

Saneem reassured that those voters had been made aware of the changes in time schedule and allowed sufficient time to cast their ballots.

With pre-polling statistics still waiting to be confirmed from the Eastern division, Saneem said voter turnout had been high.

“The Central, Western and Northern division’s statistics are with us and generally speaking we have over 75 percent up to 81 percent turnout in various locations”.

In total yesterday, 65 polling stations were running and as the last box was packed away and the Fijian elections office is expecting voter turnout to rise.
