Massey University offers both distance learning and on campus learning opportunities to its students. Most of its media related education is conducted in the School of Communication, Journalism & Marketing. The School offers two flagship degrees; the Bachelor of Business Studies (BBS) and the Bachelor of Communication. Those wanting a broad business background enrol in the BBS, which offers a strong grounding in core business disciplines followed by a specialisation in either Marketing or in Communication. Those wanting a combination of arts and business enrol in the Bachelor of Communication.
This innovative, cross disciplinary degree allows a major in either communication management, public relations, journalism studies or marketing communication to be combined with a minor in an arts subject, such as linguistics, media studies, expressive arts or modern languages. This is well suited to those with aspirations for a career in communication, rather than advancement to general management.
The School also has prestigious diplomas and postgraduate programmes. The elite Graduate Diploma in Journalism has produced many of New Zealand’s recent Journalism award winners. While access to this programme is limited, anyone can benefit from the School’s knowledge base in journalism by enrolling in the Graduate Diploma or Bachelor of Communication in Journalism Studies.
All programmes can be completed via distance learning.
The university’s main degrees in journalism are:
Graduate Diploma in Journalism Studies(GDipJS)
Postgraduate Diploma in Journalism(PGDipJ)
Master of Journalism(MJ)
Bachelor of Communication(BC)
Bachelor of Communication (Media Studies)BC (MS)
