Whitireia New Zealand is a government owned and funded tertiary institute of technology, known for its high student success rate and culturally diverse student body. It has grown since its establishment in 1986 on the shores of Porirua Harbour, to become an 11,000 student operation with campuses in Auckland, Wellington, Kapiti and Porirua.
In the last four years a capital programme has enhanced the main Porirua campus with an award winning library, industry trades centre, business and IT building, health and education centre and a new technology ‘texlon’ covered central atrium.
Students consider the high academic quality of Whitireia programmes to be a point of difference in the region and the culture of the campus, represented by the support offered by tutors to be above all other educational providers in the greater Wellington area.
Whitireia Journalism School
Whitireia Journalism School operates out of modern new facilities in Cuba St, Wellington. It focuses on multimedia, ensuring graduates learn research, reporting, writing and camera skills required for journalism on the internet and for newspapers, magazines, radio and TV.
It is the only journalism school in NZ with its own news website – NewsWire – where student stories, photographs and videos are posted daily. The site is linked to top NZ news website Scoop, which exposes student work to more than half a million page uploads a month. When graduates seek employment after the programme, they send editors links to their work on NewsWire.co.nz
