A SOCIAL WORKER AND RESEARCHER SHARES HER UPDATES:
Veronica Kanem, often known by her colleagues in New Zealand as Tri, is engaged on a masters study programme in Women and Gender studies at the University of Waikato. She is here through a NZ ASEAN Scholarship granted to pursue her studies based on her work experiences.

Veronica is a social worker with the non-profit SKP (Justice and Peace Commission) of the Diocese of Merauke for the past 3 years. She became programme manager and has been involved in organisation programme arrangements and negotiation. She has been mediating with indigenous Papuans over the Merauke Integrated Food and Energy Estate (MIFEE), project which is converting Papuan lands and forests into forestry, food and biofuel production for Indonesian government and business interests.

While in New Zealand she is looking for what “can support us in West Papua”. She will talk about current social issues in Merauke and with the local indigenous community.

Organised by the Asia-Pacific Human Rights Coalition (APHRC) and Pax Christi in partnership with the Pacific Media Centre.
