The early provisional results were coming in tonight from Fiji’s first general election in eight years since the military coup in 2006.

In a media briefing shortly before the close of polling, the Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem gave an update of voting.

Saneem reported that one polling officer had been taken to hospital.

“The elections office has been a little sad to announce that one of our presiding officers at a polling station has been taken to the hospital having suffered a heart attack,” he said.

“We have made necessary arrangements for a second person to replace that presiding officer at that polling station.”

Along with this announcement, a random selection of three polling venues’ provisional results were given.

“In the north from Wanikoro Public School which is far from Lambasa town there is 187 people out of 250 that have been recorded on our voter list- approximately 75 per cent.

“In the Western Division, Namoli Community Hall 728 voters out of 867 have been recorded on our list. At Suva Civic Centre in the Central Division, 587 voters out of 764 have been recorded, and Waibau Community Hall all the voters recorded have turned up,” he said.

The provisional results are due to start being displayed on the screen in the media centre and other screens which have been placed around the country.

These updates are happening in half hour slots from 9pm.
