SUVA: Bold steps are required to assist media in the vernacular languages, says the Media Industry Development Authority.

In a statement today, the authority says while there is relatively robust media in the English language, the media in Fijian and Hindi is languishing behind.

A reason put forward is the lack of vigorous teaching of Fijian and Hindi at tertiary level, and the absence of serious reading and writing in the vernacular languages.

However, the authority says the growth of vernacular media is necessary – as it will open up rich avenues of communication – and at the same time contribute to Fiji’s cultural diversity.

Also identified as the most challenging task for media in Fiji – is to redefine its developmental role in the context of the current realities in the country.

Planning is now underway for a major conference on arts and literature in October 2011, which will also include an important session on media in Fiji.

Last month, the Media Industry Development Authority held a meeting with representatives from radio, television and newspapers in Fiji. - Fiji Broadcasting Corporation/Pacific Media Watch
