AUDIO: Fiji journalists urged to stop censoring themselves

SUVA (Radio Australia / Pacific Media Watch): Journalists in Fiji have been told to stop censoring their own work by the woman who for years was in charge of official government censorship.

Ministry of Information head Sharon Smith-Johns made the plea to end self-censorship at a conference on Media and Democracy at the University of the South Pacific.

She said while journalists in Fiji might be too afraid to report fully, they shouldn't use that as an excuse to not do their jobs.

The head of the USP's journalism department, Dr Marc Edge, who organised the conference, has welcomed her comments.

Bruce Hill reports on the conference, which saw journalists examining the state of their profession in Fiji today.
