AUCKLAND: New Zealand’s only independent awards for investigative journalism are being raised by $1500 a year.

The Bruce Jesson Foundation’s awards, established in memory of long-time Republican editor Bruce Jesson, are awarded annually for “critical, informed, analytical and creative journalism or writing which will contribute to public debate in New Zealand on an important issue or issues”.

The main award, paid in advance as support for the time and other costs required for an investigative project, goes up this year from $3000 to $4000.

The Emerging Journalist Award, paid for already-published work by a print journalism student nominated by the country’s journalism programme leaders, will double from $500 to $1000.

The foundation is calling for applications for the main award from anyone with a journalistic project meeting the award’s criteria, and nominations from journalism programme leaders for published work by their students. Both awards close on 31 August 2011.

Nominations together with appropriate supporting documentation including, for the emerging journalism award, copies of the nominated articles, should be forwarded to Dr Joe Atkinson, secretary of the Bruce Jesson Foundation, by email j.atkinson@auckland.ac.nz, or in hard copy c/- Political Studies Department, University of Auckland, PB 92019, Auckland. - Bruce Jesson Foundation/Pacific Media Watch
