AUCKLAND (Pacific Media Watch): AUT University’s Pacific Media Centre has been awarded six of photographer Glenn Jowitt’s poster images that are now on display in the newly built Sir Paul Reeves communications building.
The photographs have been donated by the chair of the Pacific Media Centre’s advisory board, Isabella Rasch.
In a ceremony at the university today, an elated Jowitt talked about his connection to the photographs.
“All my photos are a collaboration between people in the communities I work. They wouldn’t have been possible without them,” the New Zealand photographer explained.
He named Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King and Mahatma Gandhi as three individuals he has been greatly inspired by.
Jowitt has been on some 30 trips in the Pacific over more than three decades.
Faculty praise
Glenn Jowitt received acclaim from Pasifika student support adviser Junior Samuela and the dean of the Faculty of Design and Creative Technologies, Desna Jury.
Jury could not attend the ceremony, but sent an email praising Jowitt's photographs.
"I am thrilled that we have these wonderful images so generously gifted by Glenn, who I can claim as a constant friend of the university.
"He has been involved with us in different ways for many years and we are privileged to have more of his work finding a home on the campus," she said.
Jury said Jowitt's work offered valuable insight into the world of the Pacific and described the photographs as a "unique and significant gift".
