SUVA: (Fiji Times/Pacific Media Watch): Youth concerns always take a back seat to other issues, according to National Youth Council of Fiji chairman Usaia Cirikiwai.
He made the comment on Monday at the signing of a memorandum of understanding of the Youth Media Monitoring Project 2011 between the Department of Youth and Sports and Fiji Media Watch.
FMW chief executive officer Agatha Ferei said eight volunteers will begin training this week and to research youth issues in the mainstream media.
"Like the Department of Youth, FMW wishes to also promote and advocate for the effective coverage of youth and related youth development issues," she said.
"The monitoring activity will include radio, print, TV and the online media."
Ferei said the project findings would advocate for effective reporting of youth and related development issues.
Director for Youth and Sports Makereta Sauturaga said the signing was a culmination of months of discussions with FMW and also supported the Dialogue and Mutual Understanding theme of International Year of Youth 2011.
"The theme as you may appreciate points to and encourages the effective participation of young people in decision-making," said Sauturaga.
