SUVA (Fiji Times / Pacific Media Watch): Communication failure adversely affects people's lives and they must have access to information.

This was the message conveyed to 50 participants at a Fiji Media Watch workshop in Labasa yesterday.

In her closing speech, media education officer Lusiana Senibuli told the participants in the iTaukei language that communication was an important part of people's lives.

"When there is communication breakdown, our lives will be affected."

Senibuli said it was important to educate people to use the media as a mode of communication because it had its advantages and limitations.

"We can be misled by the media but it is important to note that we are not abusing our rights with the media.

"We hope this workshop will act as a guideline to everyone here and we urge you to convey the message to your communities and villages."

Macuata Provincial Youth president Manoa Tuiwainikai said he was grateful to be part of the workshop.

"Most of us don't really know the importance of media communication and with this workshop we are able to understand the advantages and disadvantages of media," Mr Tuiwainikai said.

"We should be vigilant about watching movies or passing information because we might be influenced to follow something wrong."

The three-day workshop ended yesterday.
