SUVA (Fiji Television / Pacific Media Watch): Fiji Television's popular Close-Up current affairs programme has featured the Second PINA Pacific Media Summit held in Pacific Harbour, Fiji, last month.

Among regional Pacific media personalities interviewed by reporter Geoffrey Smith for the programme were independent Fiji-born Australian journalist Graham Davis, Tongan publisher and broadcaster Kalafi Moala, PINA president Moses Stevens, Fiji Sun publications manager  Leone Cabenatabua, Radio Australia Pacific Beat correspondent Bruce Hill, Pacific Media Centre director Professor David Robie, and Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat media adviser Johnson Honimae plus many journalism students at the University of the South Pacific and Fiji National University.

Davis said that a strong theme in the conference was "back to basics" with greater accuracy, objectivity and more attention to detail and credibility.

Dr Robie spoke about the challenges and opportunities posed by social media for Pacific journalists. He also described strategies for harnessing social media for democracy.
