HONIARA (Solomon Star/Pacific Media Watch): Prime Minister Gordon Darcy Lilo has called on the media to report with responsibility and strive for excellence in their reporting.
The Prime Minister reiterated his call following a front page story in this paper last week which highlighted that Prime Minister Lilo has meddled with the appointment of the new police commissioner.
In a statement to the Solomon Star, he described the report as fabricated, unsubstantiated and untrue.
“I respect the role of the media in informing the public about issues of national interest but this must be done with responsibility and reporters must live up to their ethics,” he said.
“If the media cannot report responsibly and abide by their own ethics then who will do that? What will the Solomon Islands society be like if we continue to practice reporting which is based on unsubstantiated, unfounded and unbalanced information?” the Prime Minister questioned.
Meanwhile Prime Minister Lilo also called on Transparency Solomon Islands (TSI) to respect the roles and responsibilities of the key integrity institutions we have in the country.
He made this statement following an article by TSI last week Friday on the outcome of the $4.9 million school computer project.
TSI alleged it has been a scandal that has mocked the role and responsibilities of institutions like the ministry of education, police, the ministry of finance, and even the then Cabinet; and that are all implicated in this alleged scandal.
