MIT Communication Programme

Diploma in Communication Studies

The one-year Diploma in Communication Studies is made up of courses from the Bachelor of Applied Communication. Students may gain a recognised qualification in one year or go on to complete the Bachelor of Applied Communication.

Applicants must meet the entry requirement of possessing at least NCEA 64 credits at Level 2, including one subject which demonstrates fluency in English or equivalent / or at least 14 credits in an approved subject at Level 3, including one subject which demonstrates fluency in English or equivalent / or the MIT Certificate in Communication or its equivalent / or demonstrate equivalent practical, professional or educational experiences which indicate the ability to study at diploma level

They also must demonstrate English language competence (equivalent to IELTS 6.5) to undertake this programme which is taught and assessed in English. International applicants must have an overall IELTS (Academic) band score of 6.5 (with no score below 6.0) or equivalent.

Course Content: Students need to select eight courses from various levels of courses including Interpersonal Communication; News Media; Public Relations and Event Management; Writing and Critical Thinking; Psychology; Team and Organisational Communication; Communication and Relationships; e-Communication and Knowledge Management; Effective Presentations; Media Writing and Relationships; Popular Media; Professional and Organisational Writing; Public Relations in Practice; Advanced Public Relations and Event Management; Communication Research; Intercultural Communication; Negotiation, Advocacy and Lobbying; Organisational Communication.

Certificate in Computing, Communication and Business (Level 4)

This six month qualification will provide students with a broad knowledge base and help them move on to other study programmes in more specialised areas of business or communication. The practical group-based activities will develop their personal and team skills – skills employers look for.

The Certificate can be taken either full-time or part-time and is well suited to school leavers, mature learners returning to study or those seeking a career change and looking to update their skills.

The Applicants must meet the entry requirements of possessing at least 40 NCEA credits at Level 2, including subjects that demonstrate competency in English, and Mathematics at NCEA Level 1 or above or equivalent/ or are graduates of appropriate qualifications of at least 60 credits at Level 2 and above / or demonstrate that they can work/study at a level appropriate to the programme. This will be demonstrated through an interview’

Moreover applicants must have English language competence to undertake this programme which is taught and assessed in English. Any applicants who first language is not English may be required to provide evidence of an overall IELTS (Academic) band score of 6 (with no score below 5.5) or equivalent.
