MELBOURNE (Radio Australia / Pacific Media Watch): A new book published in New Zealand has taken a look at the changing function of the media in Papua New Guinea.

Press, Politics and the People in Papua New Guinea 1950-1975 by Philip Cass traces the evolution of newspapers from serving the expatriate community in colonial days to reflecting the growing aspirations of the indigenous people.

It also sets the PNG experience against the wider picture in Melanesia.

Author Dr Cass from Unitec New Zealand says in the early days most news was designed for expatriates.

Presenter: Richard Ewart

Speaker: Dr Philip Cass, author, Press, Politics and the People in Papua New Guinea 1950-1975, academic, Unitec New Zealand.
