SUVA (The Fiji Times / Pacific Media Watch): Learning from experts in a democratic Parliament sitting, two Fiji Times senior editorial members will be bound for New Zealand next week.

The NZ High Commission acting head of mission Mark Ramsden said the New Zealand government was proud to support Fiji media.

"One way we have been able to do so is sponsor the two senior newsroom staff from The Fiji Times for an attachment with the Dominion Post in Wellington," Ramsden said.

"The Fiji Times does great work and its really a nice way to pair the Times with a leading newspaper in New Zealand."

Ramsden said the High Commission would meet up with other media outlets and talk to them about similar programmes.

"We have a strong relationship with the Fiji media and this is something we would like to reinforce," he said.

The Fiji Times general manager Hank Arts said it was a learning opportunity for both the newspaper and also Fiji.

"It's an opportunity to improve, learn from experts in the field who are used to a democratic environment. This is something for our young team which is fairly new. It will assist in upskilling and giving a guide how to approach a democratic parliamentary reporting," Arts said.

Editorial operations manager Tamara Smith will accompany chief-of-staff Timoci Vula to Wellington.

Smith said the assistance from the High Commission could not have come at a better time while  the different landscapes that Fiji operated in continued to change.

"In developing and adapting to these changes, learning from other bigger established organisations is imperative, and I am grateful to be given this opportunity to do so," she said.
