PORT VILA (Vanuatu Daily Post/Pacific Media Watch): As the semester for most universities in the Pacific region is well under way, more than 100 students selected for a scholarship to study in Papua New Guinea are still in Vanuatu.

Some students, who will be pursuing studies in various institutions in PNG, have had changes made to the institution or course by the PNG education authorities.

These changes came after letters of offer of scholarships were given to the students with the intended programme of study.

At a briefing held by the Ministry of Education and Training, Vanuatu, students were informed that the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) and the Papua New Guinea University of Technology (UNITECH) could not take students in because these institutions would be accommodating participants of the Pacific Games in July.

Some students, who were offered places in science courses, were suddenly told they had to do social sciences courses.

The Vanuatu Daily Post spoke with some of the students and have confirmed that all who were selected to study at UPNG and UNITECH could not continue their studies with these institutions, but have been transferred to other universities, such as the University of Goroka.

The Daily Post understands the students should be departing for PNG this week.
