SUVA (The Fiji Times/Pacific Media Watch): About 60 women from all diversities attended the Fiji Women's Forum meeting held at a Suva hotel yesterday.

The meeting aimed to encourage women to participate in nation-building and engage them in development and political processes of the country.

FemLINKPACIFIC's executive director Sharon Bhagwan-Rolls said their focus was on women's involvement in local government.

Bhagwan-Rolls said they also reflected on the forum's success and challenges in relation to the 2014 national elections.

"We were able to identify opportunities and challenges Fijian women who participated in local governance faced," she said.

She said the meeting was also another way to secure and support the full participation of women in all levels of decision-making.

"It was amazing to see it all come together and we are also keen to see the progress of the of the Fiji Women's Forum as an exciting and radical space."

Bhagwan-Rolls said they were hoping to draw attention to the diverse needs and concerns of women by facilitating appropriate responses.

FemLINKPACIFIC also launched their new radio documentary known as Fiji's Politics: A Woman's World which has been produced with the assistance of the UNDP.

The media documentary is part of the continued media advocacy campaign for women in political and leadership spaces.

Participants also observed a vigil in honour of Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) journalist Losana McGowan who died tragically at Easter weekend.
