PORT VILA (Vanuatu Daily Post/Pacific Media Watch): The Vanuatu Daily Post group, including Buzz FM 96 and related media brands, have appointed Dan McGarry as their new media director.
McGarry has lived and worked in Vanuatu for more than a decade and is fluent in Bislama, French and English.
He has written weekly columns for the Daily Post and the Independent in the past, and has published regularly in a number of other online and print publications since then, including the Vanuatu section of the Economist Intelligence Unit.
His photography has also been seen on the Humans of Vanuatu Facebook page, which has more than 20,000 devoted fans.
He provided much of the photographic and video records of the damage of Cyclone Pam in the days immediately following the disaster.
His photos were carried on wire services around the world, and his video was featured on CNN, BBC, and other global media sites.
He has been interviewed by Radio Australia, Al Jazeera, CNN, BBC and other media outlets.
Nom de plume
Most people will know him from his nom de plume of Graham Crumb, which he has used since 1994.
“I worked mostly in IT for many years,” said McGarry, explaining the pseudonym. “And it just made sense to hang a polite veil between my technical work and my writing and photography. Now there’s no need for it.
“Writing was my first love - it’s what I studied in university - and it’s nice finally to be able to do it fulltime.”
Reporting to the publisher and the owners, he assumes responsibility for all news and editorial content in all media outlets operated by Trading Post Ltd.
