2009-ongoing
Pacific Scoop is a new independent regional “hub” partnership venture between AUT University’s Pacific Media Centre and the independent news portal Scoop Media Ltd. The website is based in the School of Communication Studies where postgraduate Pacific student journalists and other media students with an interest in Pasifika affairs – especially those on the Asia-Pacific Journalism and Graduate Diploma in Pacific Journalism courses – are filing regular stories.
Other students on regional and international internships also report for the website. The vision is for Pacific Scoop to produce a distinct blend of news, current affairs and analysis – a fresh and independent “voice” of the Pacific.
Education, culture, creativity, environment, health, human rights, media, social justice, resource development, regional security and technology are some of the topics high on the website’s reportage list.
Supplementing the daily file from students are articles by Pacific academic staff - such as professors Wadan Narsey and Biman Prasad, and senior researcher Dr Steven Ratuva - regional journalists and civil society advocates and analysts. Student journalists from the University of the South Pacific are also among contributors.
