AUCKLAND (Radio New Zealand National / Pacific Media Watch): Pacific Media Centre director Professor David Robie has outlined a case for the repeal of the draconian Fiji media decree in the wake of the general election.

He was interviewed today by Colin Peacock on Radio New Zealand's weekly media programme Mediawatch.

This was the first election in Fiji in almost eight years after the military coup in 2006.

Dr Robie discussed the Fiji election, media freedom, the 48-hour blackout on elections coverage prior to election day and the joint submission by the Paris-based Reporters Without Borders and PMC to next month's UN Human Rights Council calling for the repeal of the Fiji Media Industry Development Decree

The submission also called for an end to intimidation of journalists and urgent introduction of a Freedom of Information law.

Pacific Media Centre manages the university's Pacific Media Watch freedom project.
