SUVA (The Fiji Times/Pacific Media Watch): The Fijian Media Association has paid tribute to the 10 French Charlie Hebdo journalists and cartoonists murdered by jihadist gunmen in Paris, France, last month with a solemn vigil held at the Fiji Museum in the Fiji capital of Suva.
The vigil at the weekend for the January 7 massacre was a chance for journalists to reflect on the price of freedom of speech.
Speaking at the event, Methodist Church Secretary of Communications Rev James Bhagwan said the event was to remember those who gave their lives in the pursuit of courage.
He also appealed to all media workers to exercise courage in dispensing their duties.
Association president Ricardo Morris said the event also doubled as a chance to celebrate the work of Fiji journalists in 2014 and in particular for their coverage of the September 2014 general election.
He said there would be special focus on developing the skills of all media workers this year with the association already identifying areas that could be worked on.
Morris also thanked the American Embassy for its support, saying the event would not have been possible without the generous help.
