SUVA: The Fiji Attorney-General and Minister of Communications has stressed media foreign ownership has been restricted in the country as the media plays a critical role and needs a complete sense of stakeholder ship in the country.
Speaking as chief guest at the Fiji Media Watch Workshop "Empowering communities to be responsible consumers of the media" in Suva today, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum acknowledged the critical role that the media played in informing the people daily about various important issues in society.
However, Sayed-Khaiyum highlighted that media in Fiji lacked a balanced coverage on stories and in-depth analysis of issues and there needed to be more voices given to the marginalised groups in society as there was more coverage on the elite group.
Sayed-Khaiyum believed there was also limited incentives for journalists to develop in their field.
