SUVA (PACNEWS/Pacific Media Watch): One of the few remaining media elder statesmen in the Pacific region, Father John Lamani of Solomon Islands, has urged members of the regional media family not to relocate its secretariat from Fiji.
Instead, members should continue to support the regional media body, the Pacific Islands News Association (PINA), despite the current challenges in place.
“The real PINA are those of us who are present here today. Without us being members of the organization, PINA will not exist.
“We must also acknowledge the host government for allowing the organisation to operate regardless of the many challenges.
“To me, that underlines the continued support of the host government for PINA to be located here,” said Father Lamani, who delivered the keynote address at the official opening of the 2nd Pacific Media Summit at the Lagoon Resort in Pacific Harbour Tuesday evening.
The PINA Secretariat has been headquartered in Fiji since 1991.
The organisation will celebrate its 21st year of existence in Fiji at a birthday party with members of the regional media family on Friday to coincide with the close of the weeklong summit, themed “Building a Healthy and Responsible Pacific Media Culture.”
