SUVA: Everyone's a winner, Rashneel Kumar says.
Kumar, a third-year journalism student and part-time sports reporter with The Fiji Times, has scooped the All Media Achievement award at the annual University of the South Pacific journalism awards night.
"It's really awesome. It's a big boost, especially for a budding journalist," he said.
"I see the award as a big motivation because it has given me a wide choice not only in print but also in radio and television."
Kumar thanked his colleagues for their dedication and hardwork.
"The winners are not only those who won awards tonight," he said. "We are all winners because we walk away mature as students and journalists."
Speaking at the awards, chief guest and femLINKPACIFIC executive director Sharon Bhagwan-Rolls reminded students that "who and what happens in the news and how people and events are portrayed matters.
"Who is left out and what is not covered are equally important," she said.
"Across the world, cultural underpinnings of gender inequality and discrimination against women are too often reinforced through the media."
She said if they did not peel away at the layers to address the root causes of gender inequalities they would not assist in making the change that was so much needed. - The Fiji Times/Pacific Media Watch
