SUVA (Fiji Broadcasting Corporation / Pacific Media Watch): Transparency International Fiji is proposing social media to expose youths to civic rights and responsibilities.
The idea was brain stormed in a ‘Hackathon’ workshop in Indonesia.
Programme coordinator Fenton Lutunatabua was at the meet and proposed two challenges.
One challenge engages youth across the country through an online tool for civic education – made available to teachers - and the other challenge relates to the 2014 General Elections.
Transparency International Fiji has suggested that a smart phone application for election monitors would be good for recording observations, including the number of polling officials, and the accessibility, security and operations of each polling station.
This would empower election monitors to effectively and efficiently report on the election process and ensure that basic electoral rights are protected and procedures are followed.
Lutunatabua says with election monitoring and reporting, whistleblowing will be encouraged in terms of people reporting any corrupt activities that they witness.
