AUCKLAND (Te Waha Nui / Pacific Media Watch): AUT University has been selected to host the World Journalism Education Congress (WJEC) in 2016.
The fourth meeting of the congress in 2016 will follow successful congresses in Singapore (2007), Grahamstown, South Africa (2010) and Belgium (2013).
“It feels fantastic to get the international recognition for our programme. Journalism education worldwide is at a crossroads and it is an honour to be the host of a gathering aimed at addressing these challenges,” said Associate Professor Verica Rupar, journalism curriculum leader at AUT.
Representatives of the World Journalism Education Council met in Montreal on Wednesday to select a venue for the 2016 Congress.
Dr Rupar said AUT was selected to host the congress because the school clearly outlined what it saw as the key themes in journalism education today and because AUT played an important role in journalism education in the region.
“We run a range of international projects related to journalism education today. All staff members have a distinctive journalism education strand in their research portfolio,” said Dr Rupar.
The World Journalism Education Congress is an informal coalition representing 32 academic associations worldwide that are involved in journalism and mass communication at a university level.
The idea behind WJEC is to bring educators from six continents together to focus on issues that are universal in the field.
