AUCKLAND: An opposition MP in New Zealand says he supports a coalition taking court action over the Ministry of Education’s move to suspend the producing of Pacific language books for schools.

The Coalition of Pacific languages group represents more than 40 Pacific organisations and thousands of parents and individuals, who say the government’s move is a breach of human rights.

They are opposed to the production of the popular Tupu and Folaunga series of language books being stopped indefinitely.

Mangere Labour MP, Su’a William Sio, says the community’s effort to fight it, is understandable.

There’s an obligation on any government to ensure that those languages are protected. If we as a people lose the language we lose more than just the ability to communicate in our first languages, we lose our history and our culture. - Radio NZ International/Pacific Media Watch
