AUCKLAND (Asia Pacific Report/RNZ National/Pacific Media Watch): The Pacific Media Centre, well established as a champion for media freedom, celebrated its 10th anniversary last week and the milestone has been highlighted on the RNZ National Nine to Noon programme.
Media commentator Gavin Ellis complimented the centre at Auckland University of Technology (AUT) for its “comprehensive” and in-depth “overview” of the Asia-Pacific region, especially on media issues.
The PMC marked its event with a photojournalism book launching and panel featuring media freedom in the Philippines in the face of the spate of extrajudicial killings and also in West Papua.
Ellis noted the contribution by the centre’s director Professor David Robie, both in reporting and scholarship for the regon. Listen at 9min 25sec:

Ellis also paid tribute to journalist Yasmine Ryan who has died tragically in Turkey.
She played a prominent role in reporting the so-called Arab Spring from Tunisia in a wide-ranging international journalism career.
The latest New Zealand media ownership report, also at AUT, highlights the number of privately-owned and digital media outlets. Ellis asks could our largest newspaper groups go the same way?
