WELLINGTON (Wellington Scoop/Pacific Media Watch): Fairfax Media announced this morning that it had been unable to print today’s edition of the Dominion Post, a situation which it described as unprecedented.

The problem was caused by a “significant” computer failure which the company greatly regretted.

Fairfax Media CEO Allen Williams said it was bitterly disappointing not to be able to publish.

“Staff across New Zealand worked through the night to fix the problem but we ran out of time," he said.

“The failure to produce these papers is unprecedented and we are doing all we can to get our system working again.”

Three other Fairfax newspapers also failed to appear because of the computer failure: The Press in Christchurch, the Timaru Herald and the Southland Times.

Update from Fairfax Media
Fairfax Media’s four afternoon papers are likely to be published today despite a major computer fault that has affected the company’s operations.

The Nelson Mail, Manawatu Standard, Waikato Times and Marlborough Express are each producing 12-page broadsheet newspapers covering key local, national and international news and some advertising.

The computer fault occurred yesterday afternoon and affected the company’s editorial and advertising production system.

The afternoon papers used a different production system to produce today’s editions.

Fairfax’s five morning papers were badly affected by the fault with only the Taranaki Daily News, managing to publish a paper.

Fairfax Media New Zealand CEO Allen Williams said the company apologised to readers and advertisers who did not receive their paper this morning.
