SUVA (French Embassy in Fiji / Pacific Media Watch): French Ambassador Gilles Montagnier today presented a cheque to the Arts, Law and Education Faculty Dean of the University of the South Pacific, Dr Akanisi Kedrayate, and journalism coordinator Dr Marc Edge in support of the proposed symposium on Media and Democracy in the South Pacific.
In making his presentation, Ambassador Montagnier said that the French government was pleased to continue to support education and development in the South Pacific through USP.
“The French government supported the establishment of the USP Journalism program at the end of the 1980s and currently also sponsors programs in both the Faculty of Arts, Law and Education and the Oceania Centre for Arts, Culture and Pacific Studies,” he said.
Montagnier also added that he was glad to announce that in a few weeks the French government will sign two new grant agreements with USP as France continues to assist Fiji, and the South Pacific, in its development efforts.
In thanking the Ambassador, the USP’s Dean, Dr Kedrayate, said that the university was grateful for France’s generosity and ongoing support through the years.
The symposium, which will be held at the University’s Laucala Campus on September 6-7, will bring together regional and international media scholars along with Pacific Island journalists and journalism educators to discuss issues related to Media and Democracy in the South Pacific.
