AUCKLAND: Many South Pacific countries and territories have lifted tsunami warnings after Japan's catastrophic 8.9 magnitude earthquake, but Tahiti ordered many residents to stay ashore.

But the "Big Island" in Hawai'i suffered widespread coastal damage. No fatalities or injuries were reported.

The death toll from Friday's 8.9 magnitude earthquake reached more than 1700 on Sunday, with some areas suffering devastating damage, according to the National Police Agency.

Japan declared emergencies at two crippled nuclear power plants.

NZ: Academics, journalists, students raise West Papuan flag in NZ ‘solidarity’ gesture

AUCKLAND (Asia Pacific Report/Pacific Media Watch): Academics, journalists and students today raised the West Papuan flag – an act banned in Indonesia and punishable by up to 15 years in jail – at a Pacific Media Centre-hosted symposium in Auckland today.

The protest marked the 59th anniversary of the day West Papuans first raised their flag of independence, known as the Morning Star, on 1 December 1961.
