SUVA (The Fiji Times / Pacific Media Watch): A new appointment has been made to fill the post of senior lecturer and coordinator of the media and journalism discipline at the University of the South Pacific.

The head of the School of Language, Arts and Media (SLAM), Professor Sudesh Mishra, has confirmed the appointment of Dr Ian Weber as the new coordinator for the programme.

Dr Weber was a visiting lecturer in semester one last year and taught international journalism.

He said he was excited about returning to Fiji and working with a wonderful group of students and staff within the media and journalism programme.

"My experience at USP was fantastic because of the quality of students I taught and I would say USP journalism students are some of the best I have taught in the world," Dr Weber said.

"I feel USP's media and journalism programme has incredible potential to meet the needs of the media industry and societies throughout the region."

Dr Weber said this was because of the excellent faculty leadership, a wonderful group of dedicated professional instructors and a group of hardworking students who were willing to learn.

The university also announced the departure of Dr Marc Edge who left the university late last year.
