New PMC book celebrates Solomon Islands women achievers
A new book, Being the First: Storis Blong Oloketa Mere Lo Solomon Aelan, was launched today at AUT's Institute of Public Policy (IPP). Edited by AUT's Prof. Marilyn Waring and Dr Alice Aruhe'eta Pollard, the book documents the personal lives of 14 Solomon Island women leaders and includes a history of women's achievements over the past 50 years. It was launched by Solomon Islands honorary consul to New Zealand, Doreen Kuper.
Also present were Pacific Islands Studies Professor Tagaloatele Peggy Fairbairn-Dunlop, IPP Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Ian Shirley, Head of AUT's School of Communication Studies, Dr Alan Cocker, and Ministry of Pacific Island Affairs representative Fuimaono Tuiasai.
Kuper said that the book set an example for other Pacific Islands and encouraged young girls to "take the hard road and follow it through."
Being the First was published by the Pacific Media Centre for IPP and the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI),
