Certificate in Journalism – 1 year

Diploma in Journalism – 1 year
In 1998, as Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) gained momentum, competency-based training was introduced, with assistance from the AusAID funded VIT Institutional Strengthening Project. The project also commenced a significant building program on the Port Vila campus and invested heavily in teacher training.

Commencing in 2006, the AusAID funded TVET Strengthening Project was based at VIT and made significant improvements to staff skills, facilities and teaching resources and extended TVET activities to the two newly established Rural Training Centres in SAMNA and TAFEA provinces.

In 2007, the new European Union-funded Tourism, Hospitality and Leisure training centre was opened. Later in 2007, the Australian Pacific Technical College established a School of Tourism and Hospitality at the VIT campus and shares the new facilities with VIT.

Currently, VIT has several teaching departments with over 80 teachers and 15 support staff. The teaching staff are a mixture of Anglophones and Francophones that deliver courses to both English and French-speaking students.

The courses offered are mainly certificate courses including Accounting, Office Administration, Information Technology, Tourism and Hospitality, Art, Journalism and the technical trade areas such as Carpentry and Joinery, Building Construction, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Automotive. In 2008, a range of new short courses was introduced.

VIT operates on 3-term 13-week academic year, as set by the Department of Education, commencing early February and finishing early December.
