The University of Papua New Guinea's journalism programme was the first dedicated course of its kind in the South Pacific, being founded with New Zealand Aid at independence in 1975. It was also the headquarter of a regional UNESCO journalism programme.

The University of Papua New Guinea has grown from strength-to-strength since its establishment in 1965 and graduated thousands of people, among them Prime Ministers, Ministers, bureaucrats, doctors, entrepreneurs, judges, scientists and many others from the Pacific and other countries. Every year UPNG also educates students in its Port Moresby campuses, five Open Campuses and 13 Study Centres.

Academic programmes have gone through reviews and match that of other universities throughout the world. UPNG emphasises on quality and continues to review quality of its programs in medicine, health sciences, physical and natural sciences, law, business, humanities and social sciences.

The university has also achieved benchmarks in a number of areas under organisational restructure by:

  • - Introducing a Grade Point Average system equal to other international universities to assess our students’ progress;
  • - Introducing the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) programme, internationally accepted curriculum for medical schools and universities;
  • - Developing residential facilities for our international students;
  • - Embarking on collaborative research agreements with other international institution in medicinal plants and animals and other research programs through the Research and Postgraduate Studies Centre or schools; and
  • - Involving student exchange programmes with other universities.

The university’s objective as expressed in the University Act is - “to be dedicated to the pursuit, advancement and dissemination of knowledge, understanding and wisdom”.
