None of the global media freedom networks do comprehensive reports on the Pacific in their annual media freedom surveys.
Some do not even list all the Pacific nations and there are questions about ranking methodologies. The reason for this is that compared with other countries in the Asia-Pacific region, the breaches of human rights and freedom of expression relating to the media in the Pacific are rather muted.
However, there is still a need for a comprehensive report on the media freedom issues facing Pacific nations and territories. The objective of this research project is to compile a media freedom “status” report of between 6000 and 10,000 words to be published in the October edition of Pacific Journalism Review.
This may become a template for future reports.
