SUVA (Fiji Broadcasting Corporation / Pacific Media Watch): The Media Industry and Development Authority is appealing to all Fijians to refrain from using the media, including social media, to incite violence through the use of inflammatory language to intimidate voters.

MIDA chair Ashwin Raj said this could result in the erosion of stability, safety and security of the voters.

”Given the constraints with regards to the monitoring of the social media, MIDA appeals to the public sense of reason and civic responsibility to create an enabling environment for all Fijians to exercise their constitutional rights to vote.”

Raj also expressed his concerns about reports of death threats made against journalists.

He has reiterated that the Fijian media has the right to report without any fear and intimidation.

”The media must also remain independent, give equal access to all political actors, must not be seen as aiding and abetting the political agenda of one political party over others, to declare their ideological gist position if any and substantiate their reports with facts.”

Meanwhile, media companies have also been reminded not to publish the result of any election related opinion polls until the close of polling next Wednesday evening.
