SUVA (University of the South Pacific / Pacific Media Watch): The University of the South Pacific today confirmed Dr Marc Edge has been relieved of his administrative responsibilities as journalism course coordinator.
Professor Sudesh Mishra, head of the School of Language, Arts and Media (SLAM), would assume the role of coordinator of journalism, the university said in a statement.
Dr Edge had been filling this position temporarily since the departure of the substantive head of journalism, Shailendra Singh, who was on study leave completing a doctorate.
However, Dr Edge was still an active employee of the university in his capacity as a senior lecturer in the journalism programme and would be working closely with Professor Mishra in the education and training of journalism students, the university said.
The USP statement said Dr Edge had been relieved of the coordinator's role on Monday and the university wished to thank Dr Edge for his work in training students in media and journalism.
Dr Edge had been embroiled in controversy at the university since the Pacific Media Summit in Fiji in March.
Fiji Broadcasting Corporation News reported that it was understood there had been "several complaints against Dr Edge from some second and third year journalism students" and some award-winning students reportedly boycotted this year's USP journalism awards last Friday.
