AUCKLAND (Scoop / Pacific Media Watch): New Zealand journalist Jon Stephenson, a research associate of the Pacific Media Centre, has won the written press trophy at the annual Bayeux-Calvados awards for war correspondents in France.
He has won the award for his Metro feature "Eyes Wide Shut" on New Zealand’s involvement in the transfer of detainees to torture in Afghanistan.
The article was attacked by the New Zealand government and the military establishment.
The results of the annual awards were announced on Saturday in France.
In 2006, Stephenson received the same award for a two-part Metro report from Iraq.
The UN has today released a report on what it calls "systematic torture'" of detainees in Afghanistan.
The photojournalism prize went to Yuri Kozyrev or Noor for coverage of the Libyan civil war, the radio prize to Etienne Monin of France INFO and television award to Alex Crawford of Sky News - both for reportage on Libya.
The web journalism prize went to Sara Leduc and Zoé Lamazou for their reports on the breach of the Congo peace treaty.
