Kyaw Hsu Mon, a senior journalist with The Irrawaddy news magazine published in both Burmese and English, dropped in on the Pacific Media Centre today.
She workshopped with a group of Danish, Finnish, Taiwanese and New Zealand students on AUT's Asia-Pacific Journalism course, discussing political reforms, media freedom and ethnic minority issues in Myanmar.
Several of the students are on the Inclusive Journalism Initiative (IJI) programe.
Hsu Mon has worked as a journalist in Yangon for 11 years and has experienced working as a journalist under the military junta, as well as media reforms since 2011.
Her reporting covers human rights, economic and political issues, and she joined the independent Irrawaddy last year.
The Asia New Zealand Foundation sponsored her visit to New Zealand for professional development ahead of Myanmar’s general elections in 2015, and to network with New Zealand journalists - some of whom may travel to Myanmar in future.
"She has spent four days with the parliamentary press gallery, spending time with a variety of news organisations in the last week before Parliament rises," the foundation's media adviser Rebecca Palmer said.
