AUCKLAND (Radio New Zealand Sunday/Pacific Media Watch): The story of the bombing of the Rainbow Warrior has been told many times but it is almost invariably from a New Zealand point of view - the response to a terrorist attack by French spies and the geopolitical struggle that ensued.
But the Rainbow Warrior story is also the story of the struggle of Pacific Island peoples against the nuclear testing programmes of not just France, but the US and Britain as well.
Radio New Zealand's Sunday programme presenter Wallace Chapman interviews Pacific Media Centre director and professor David Robie, author of the book Eyes of Fire about the Rainbow Warrior's last voyage; French regional journalist Amelie David; and arbitration lawyer Gary Born who took France to court over the bombing and was awarded compensation.
The programme also interviews a French journalism student on attachment with RNZ, Lise Charge; and features AUT University student journalists working on a television series about the Rainbow Warrior; with music tracks "No More Bombs" from the Huahere string band in Vanuatu in the short doco Nuclear Exodus about Rongelap, and the Herbs protest song "French Letter".
